A sheep enclosure is a must for any sheep farm. The flock of sheep must be deployed so that the sheep do not feel any inconvenience. Despite the fact that the sheep are generally unpretentious to the conditions, they need feeding at the right time, stable access to water, and protection from adverse atmospheric phenomena. In this regard, it is necessary to carefully equip the space for keeping the flocks. From the article you will learn what methods of placing sheep are available, how to properly organize the space for placing the herd, and what features can occur during construction.
First, let’s figure out how to properly name the dwelling for sheep and lambs. The house for the sheep, or, perhaps, the crib, is called differently, it all depends on the region of the Russian Federation. People call shelter for sheep a shepherd, a barn, a nightmare, a shepherd. For the most part, koshara is used and much less often the remaining types of animal names for the dwelling.
It is necessary to take a stationary corral as a sample, since it is specifically considered to be a more universal solution. A typical paddock is a space enclosed around the entire circuit, with drinking bowls and feeders located inside. The trellised fence has spacious gates on one side through which the herd is driven. The height of the fence should not be less than one meter, so that cattle could not jump over the perimeter. Often corrals are equipped with a canopy from rain and sun to provide the herd with the most comfortable conditions.
For the construction of the fence, wood is mainly used: massive and strong poles, beams, logs. It is possible to use wooden boards from thick boards. Iron fences are also found, but less, since the construction of such structures is more expensive. There are modifications of industrial manufacture – daggers, which are collapsible sections of metal of several dimensions. They can perfectly be used in domestic sheep breeding, making it possible to easily rearrange the pen as the sheep eat grass.
Industrial pens located near the shepherd or at a small distance from it are called bases. The base is arranged on the side protected from the wind, it is at least twice the size of the nightmare and, as a rule, is erected with a canopy. The floor is earthen or adobe, at times part of the floor under a canopy is poured with concrete. For walking in the winter in cold zones, bases are built closed on three sides.
The key requirements for corrals are the solidity and reliability of the structure. Sheep have a dense body composition and are characterized by considerable strength, especially males. They will break the frail fence in a day, so the building material must be carefully selected. If the corral is arranged near residential buildings or next to a roadway, it is advisable to create a solid fence, for example, from corrugated board or wooden panels. Thus, the sheep will pay less attention to external pathogens, behave more serene.
Warmed shepherds or nightmares are ideal for keeping the herd. However, in the building it is possible to create all the conditions for the long-term keeping of animals only on an industrial scale.
On a small farm it will be unnecessarily expensive to create a capital ventilation system in the stable, constantly working in the automatic mode of the drinkers and feeders. The owners of the farm will need to clean the excrement behind the sheep every day. In this regard, they try to equip an auxiliary place for the herd to stay in warm houses without a roof over their heads.
A nightmare for walking, even if the sheep farm is insignificant, it should not be restricting movement. Animals like to pile up, it’s from nature, but it doesn’t mean at all that they like stable crowding. Sheep and sheep, especially at a young age, love to play and fool around, for which they need free space. And if there are no difficulties on the pasture with this, then in a cramped nightmare on the contrary. If the sheep are not allowed to move freely, they will become passive, stop eating, develop and add weight, which as a result will affect the farmer’s earnings.
The fence around the grazing area should be high-strength and high so that the sheep do not jump over it and pierce it. To do this, the support posts are thoroughly reinforced and even poured with concrete, and horizontal boards are thoroughly pinned. The distance between the pillars is calculated so that the structure does not hang. The gates must be wide so that the cattle pass both one and two.
How to build a corral?
The construction of fencing for flocks on a small personal courtyard can be fully implemented on their own. First of all, it is necessary to make a choice of building material: unprocessed inexpensive bars, boards and poles. You can benefit from the remnants of timber and culling (with defects such as voids from branches, slightly curved and the like). The design does not have to be elegant; the key is to be reliable and comfortable for animals.
The key phases of construction are the following:
- selection of a place;
- site layout;
- territory sweeping;
- installation of the fence;
- arrangement of internal borders.
How to choose the right place?
It is necessary to put the pen in an unboggy, dry area, it is possible on a slight hill. Soil should not be crumbly, so that mink of moles and gophers do not come across it – because of them, animals can break their legs. The low place is not suitable, because dirt is collected here, as a result of which the sheep are always smeared. In addition, cattle require a large amount of sun for normal development, so a place on a not very large hill or hill is the best solution. It is not necessary to place the pen very close to the person’s dwelling, close to highways, processing plants, and places intended for burial.
First of all, it is necessary to determine the boundaries of the structure. The scale of the nightmare is determined in relation to the number of sheep: 1 m² per animal. So, for a flock of 50 goals, it is necessary to outline a plot of not less than 50 m² plus space for drinking bowls and feeders, it turns out 55-60 m². But when it is possible, the dimensions need to be increased and a place reserved for future use.
A square for a nightmare is marked with stakes driven in the corners, a cord is stretched between them (this is a guide so that the walls are straight). It is necessary to immediately identify the zones for supporting poles: they can be arranged at a distance of at least 1.5–2 meters between themselves. Additionally, you need to outline the side for the gate, but on the other hand, as a rule, equip a canopy.
Territory cleaning and preliminary work
From the found site it is necessary to remove all large objects, as well as those that are dangerous due to the possibility of injuring animals (hemp, driftwood, cobblestones, tree trunks and the like), and, of course, garbage and dried stems of weed plants. Grass can be mowed before installation. It is necessary to manually correct the landscape, add land, if necessary. And it should also be re-checked for moles, communications, groundwater and the like on the site.
Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare all the tools and building materials, so that subsequently you do not need to urgently buy something. You will need tools such as:
- device for manual drilling of the earth;
- a screwdriver or a hammer;
- screws or nails;
- bitumen primer.
The poles that will be used as supports must be protected from rapidly developing decay. We cover the lower part with mastic – approximately on a piece of one meter (the total length of the wooden pole should be at least 2.5 meters). Leave the racks until completely dry and take up the main work.
Fence Installation Guide
It is necessary to adhere to the following algorithm of actions:
- in the areas designated by the pegs, we tear out the pits under the supports with a depth of 1-1.5 meters, a diameter of 40 centimeters – this can be done manually or by means of a drill;
- we put vertical columns in the holes – you need to start from the corners, after that we do the same thing with the columns around the perimeter;
- reinforce the columns, pouring gravel into the pits;
- if the soil is very loose, then it is necessary to use a solution of concrete in addition;
- we install horizontal elements of the fence: we nail the initial board at a level of 15 cm from the ground, use long powerful nails or self-tapping screws; it is recommended to use boards with a width of one meter or more, it will be more comfortable, and the fence will be stronger; at a distance of 20-30 cm we put the second board and so on;
- gates are made from the remaining boards, onto which iron hinges are installed on the side for hanging;
- install the gate;
- we build a canopy from the same boards above the side selected in front of this section on the opposite side of the gate, cover it with tarpaulin from above.
Equip a shepherd
Stalls are arranged inside for mature sheep and offspring. The room is divided by gratings. The height should be more than 100 cm so that the cattle do not jump over the fence. To trim the lambs separate additional dry space. But the space for feeding is equipped at the rate of 30-40 centimeters per animal. Sawdust with straw is used as litter. For sheep put a large number of feeders and drinking bowls.
Building a corral and a shepherd on your own is not a particularly difficult process. The main condition is to create a detailed construction plan, make calculations and drawings, then you can erect a good structure for the herd to live.
